Kerala Cancer Surge: 300x Breast, 20% Colon Cases Rise

Eminent oncologist P. Narayanankutty Warrier has reported a staggering 300-fold increase in breast cancer cases and a 20% rise in colon cancer over the past two decades in Kerala. This alarming trend, discussed at a recent cancer awareness seminar, highlights a concerning rise in colon cancer among the youth, largely attributed to unscientific red meat consumption.
Dr. Warrier noted that approximately 70% of cancer patients seek treatment only in Stages III and IV, underscoring the critical need for early diagnosis. While advanced treatment facilities are available in Kerala, the high cost remains a barrier, according to District Medical Officer K.K. Rajaram.
Pathologist K.P. Aravindan added that fears surrounding pesticide contamination in fruits and vegetables are unfounded, with the actual risk being less than 1.5%. He stressed that inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables poses a greater threat. Changing food habits and promoting a healthy food culture are essential to mitigate cancer risks.
