Kerala Cancer Surge: 300x Breast, 20% Colon Cases Rise
3 Feb
Summary
- Breast cancer cases have surged by 300 times over twenty years.
- Colon cancer is rising among youth due to unscientific red meat consumption.
- Most patients seek treatment at late stages III and IV.

Eminent oncologist P. Narayanankutty Warrier has reported a staggering 300-fold increase in breast cancer cases and a 20% rise in colon cancer over the past two decades in Kerala. This alarming trend, discussed at a recent cancer awareness seminar, highlights a concerning rise in colon cancer among the youth, largely attributed to unscientific red meat consumption.
Dr. Warrier noted that approximately 70% of cancer patients seek treatment only in Stages III and IV, underscoring the critical need for early diagnosis. While advanced treatment facilities are available in Kerala, the high cost remains a barrier, according to District Medical Officer K.K. Rajaram.
Pathologist K.P. Aravindan added that fears surrounding pesticide contamination in fruits and vegetables are unfounded, with the actual risk being less than 1.5%. He stressed that inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables poses a greater threat. Changing food habits and promoting a healthy food culture are essential to mitigate cancer risks.
Financial difficulties, lack of awareness, and societal stigma continue to hinder many from seeking timely cancer treatment, as pointed out by Sandhya Kurup of the Indian Medical Association. Creating awareness for early diagnosis and ensuring affordable treatment options are vital.
