Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on Tuesday, October 7, 2026, following the death of a Kenyan citizen who had recently traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This marks the fourth country to record a case linked to the ongoing epidemic in eastern Congo.
The patient, who had resided in Congo for seven years, became ill approximately a month before embarking on a journey. Their travel itinerary included a road trip from Congo to Kampala, Uganda, followed by a flight to Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday, October 4, 2026.
Upon arrival at Nairobi's international airport, the individual passed through health screening and was subsequently taken to Nairobi Hospital. Admitted with symptoms including fever, chills, and bleeding, the patient was immediately placed in isolation and passed away late on Monday, October 6, 2026. Eight family members and 21 healthcare workers who attended to the patient are now under quarantine and being monitored.
Kenyan health authorities are actively tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the Jambojet flight the patient was on. The country has trained nearly 5,000 health workers in Ebola prevention and management. The World Health Organization is supporting Kenya and Uganda and has advised against travel restrictions.
Concerns have been raised regarding cross-border prevention measures, as the patient's symptoms may have been masked by medication during airport screening. The exact route from Congo to Uganda, despite a border closure, is also under scrutiny, with the patient having spent a night in Uganda before flying to Kenya. A US-built Ebola quarantine facility for US citizens exists in central Kenya but remains empty.
