Kenya Reports Third Ebola Case Amidst Fund Scrutiny
17 Oct
Summary
- Kenya confirms its third Bundibugyo virus case, a 65-year-old woman.
- The patient is a close contact of previous cases and is now quarantined.
- Concerns rise over transparency in Ebola response fund usage in DRC.
Kenya has confirmed a third case of the Bundibugyo virus, a strain of Ebola that has caused significant fatalities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The latest patient is a 65-year-old woman, identified as a primary contact and relative of the first two cases. She has been under quarantine since October 6 and is reportedly improving with supportive care.
This development follows Kenya's initial case and death reported approximately 10 days prior. The country's health ministry has moved to assure the public, stating there is no indication of community transmission and the risk to the general population remains low. Out of 130 identified contacts, 127 have been traced and are in quarantine.
Separately, Africa's leading public health body and Congolese authorities are demanding increased transparency in the management of Ebola response funds. Reports suggest that over $700 million in donor money may be unaccounted for, with a significant portion disbursed directly to aid organizations rather than the DRC government.
In other news related to the outbreak, Ebola cases have reportedly surfaced in North Ubangi, a new province in the DRC bordering the Central African Republic, marking the eighth affected province. Congolese health officials have not yet made an official announcement regarding this spread.
