A meningitis outbreak in Kent has seen the number of cases increase to 34. Of these, 23 have been confirmed, while 11 additional cases are currently under investigation by the UK Health Security Agency.
The escalating situation prompted over 400 students and eligible individuals to queue for vaccinations outside the University of Kent campus clinic. This marks the third consecutive day of long lines for the crucial jabs.
Tragically, two students have died as a result of the outbreak. One was 18-year-old Juliette Kenny, remembered by her family as "fit, healthy and strong." The other victim was a University of Kent student.
In response, NHS Kent and Medway has administered 5,794 vaccines and distributed 11,010 antibiotics as of Friday evening. Six clinics are currently operating across the county to provide these essential treatments to those eligible.
