Meningitis Cases Drop in Kent Outbreak
22 Mar
Summary
- Confirmed meningitis cases in Kent have decreased from 23 to 20.
- Nineteen out of 20 confirmed cases are meningitis B (MenB).
- Over 8,000 MenB vaccines and 12,157 antibiotics were distributed by Saturday.

Confirmed meningitis cases in Kent have seen a reduction, now standing at 20, a decrease from the previously reported 23. This adjustment follows further laboratory testing which downgraded three cases. The majority, nineteen of the confirmed cases, are identified as meningitis B (MenB), with all these individuals requiring hospitalization.
As of Sunday, the number of suspected cases under investigation also decreased to nine. Over 8,000 doses of the MenB vaccine and more than 12,000 courses of preventative antibiotics have been administered across six clinics in the county. University of Kent students eligible for these treatments can also access them through their local GPs if they are away from campus.
The outbreak has tragically resulted in two student deaths. Efforts are ongoing to maintain vigilance for new cases and to ensure rapid response. Public health officials emphasize the importance of recognizing the symptoms of invasive meningococcal disease and seeking immediate medical attention. While the risk to the general population remains low, awareness is key.
