Kent Lung Screenings Save Lives Early

Summary

  • Free lung screening pilot scheme invites smokers and ex-smokers aged 55-74.
  • Early diagnosis significantly increases survival rates for lung cancer patients.
  • Over 120 lung cancers diagnosed early in East Kent since programme started.

Smokers and ex-smokers in Kent, aged between 55 and 74, are being invited to participate in a free lung screening pilot scheme. The Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is coordinating these efforts to detect lung cancer in its earliest stages.

The initiative is particularly important as lung cancer is often difficult to diagnose early, with many individuals only realizing their condition when it is more advanced. Early diagnosis significantly enhances the availability of treatment options and improves survival prognosis.

The targeted lung health check programme, now known as the lung cancer screening programme, began in November 2022. It has since been implemented across South Kent Coast, Canterbury, Whitstable, Faversham, and Herne Bay. West Kent patients will now be screened at the Fordcombe site, with Medway and Swale to follow by the beginning of 2028.

This proactive screening has already led to the diagnosis of over 120 lung cancers in East Kent, with the majority identified at stages one or two. The success stories, like Ken Boorman from Dymchurch whose life was saved by an early diagnosis in August 2025, underscore the programme's vital role. Individuals diagnosed with lung cancer at its earliest stages are nearly 13 times more likely to survive for five years compared to those diagnosed late.
