Summary
- Kent recorded the highest number of accidental deaths in England and Wales.
- National accidental deaths rose 8% to 23,000 in the latest year.
- RoSPA urges a national strategy to tackle avoidable harm.

New figures reveal Kent recorded the highest number of accidental deaths across England and Wales in the most recent year. Over 500 people died from accidents in the county, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
Nationally, accidental deaths have seen an alarming 8% increase, reaching 23,000 individuals. RoSPA highlights that high numbers in large counties like Kent underscore the scale of the problem. Becky Hickman, RoSPA's chief executive, stressed the need for a National Accident Prevention Strategy to combat avoidable harm and injuries.
Falls, accidental poisonings, and machinery-related injuries have driven the national increase. RoSPA points to factors such as deprivation, age, and unsafe environments as linked to higher accident risks. Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman also endorsed the report, emphasizing that road injuries are often predictable and preventable, advocating for safer streets.
