5 Aug
Summary
- Kent now has the country's first standalone mechanical thrombectomy service.
- The new facility at Kent and Canterbury Hospital removes blood clots.
- The £4.5m center also treats internal bleeding and aneurysms.

A pioneering mechanical thrombectomy service, the first of its kind in the UK, has been launched at Kent and Canterbury Hospital. This new facility is equipped with advanced imaging technology enabling specialists to pinpoint and extract blood clots from the brain.
The innovative treatment has already proven life-saving, as demonstrated by the case of Anthony Ojo, a 41-year-old support worker. Following a collapse at his home, a CT scan revealed a blood clot in his brain. Doctors successfully removed the clot using the new equipment, instantly restoring blood flow and preventing potential long-term brain damage.
The stroke thrombectomy suite is the final component of the £4.5 million Kent Interventional Centre. Beyond stroke treatment, the specialized equipment at the centre can also be utilized for a variety of other critical conditions, including severe internal bleeding, ruptured aneurysms, fibroids, and certain types of cancer.
