New Opioid Strain Triggers Kenora Drug Alerts
17 Sep
Summary
- Over 60 drug poisonings reported in Kenora in two days.
- A new synthetic nitazene opioid, clodesnitazene, detected.
- 17 suspected drug-related deaths occurred from May 1 to Aug. 25, 2026.

Public health officials in northwestern Ontario have issued drug alerts due to a surge in poisonings in the Kenora area. Over 60 drug poisonings were reported within a two-day period, requiring multiple naloxone doses and medical attention, with some cases proving irreversible.
A new substance, identified as clodesnitazene, a synthetic nitazene opioid, has been detected in the region's unregulated drug supply. This substance, sometimes sold as 'down' and appearing in various colors, was confirmed by Health Canada from a May 15, 2026 sample. The mixture also tested positive for other dangerous compounds, increasing the risk of poisoning and death.
Compounding concerns, seventeen suspected drug-related deaths have been reported in the region between May 1 and August 25, 2026. Separately, an OxyContin pill tested positive for etonitazene, another potent nitazene opioid. Health officials are urging vigilance, noting that substances found in larger centers are now appearing more rapidly in smaller regions.
