The Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) located in Kattur is undergoing a significant upgrade to become a Community Health Centre (CHC). This transformation will expand the facility from its current six beds to a comprehensive 30-bed hospital, complete with additional rooms, modern operation theatres, and dedicated post-operative wards. Funds for this crucial expansion are anticipated to be released shortly, according to a senior official.
Upon completion, the upgraded centre is planned to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This will be supported by the addition of specialist doctors and other essential medical personnel. The initiative, funded under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), aims to bring specialized healthcare closer to residents in Kattur and surrounding areas, significantly reducing the burden of travel to distant government hospitals for advanced medical attention.
The project is specifically designed to benefit low-income families in Kattur, Pappakurichi, and Tiruverumbur. The NUHM guidelines suggest establishing one CHC for every 2.5 lakh people, ensuring equitable healthcare distribution. With this upgrade, Kattur will see enhanced health services, improving the overall well-being of its community.
