This trend places Karnataka among the top states, behind Maharashtra and Bihar, for private urban inpatient care. Concerns are being raised by public health experts regarding the inadequately regulated private sector and the rising out-of-pocket expenses for households.
Experts attribute this trend partly to government policies, including public-private partnerships and the expansion of telemedicine without adequate investment in primary health centers. There are also allegations of unnecessary procedures and prolonged hospital stays in private facilities. The high medical expenses associated with private care often push families into debt, necessitating stronger public healthcare and tighter regulation.
