Karnataka Aims for Zero Maternal Deaths
26 Sep
Summary
- State plans targeted interventions to eliminate preventable maternal deaths.
- Focus on preconception care to delivery and postpartum period.
- Gram panchayats achieving zero maternal deaths to be felicitated.

The State Health Department has initiated a series of measures, including district-specific interventions and improved tracking of high-risk pregnancies, with the ultimate goal of eliminating preventable maternal deaths. Health Minister U.T. Khader emphasized the government's commitment to achieving zero maternal deaths.
The comprehensive plan encompasses preconception care, quality antenatal and delivery services, emergency preparedness, and strengthening the Maternal Death Surveillance and Response system. A Zero Maternal Death Gram Panchayat campaign and digital monitoring are also key components.
Recognizing that maternal death causes vary by district, the State will empower local teams to identify and address specific regional factors. Early identification and continuous tracking of high-risk pregnancies will be bolstered, with facilities available for women needing extended care before delivery.
Community participation is being prioritized through awareness campaigns at the Gram Panchayat level. Those achieving 'zero maternal deaths' will receive State-level recognition. A dedicated State-level unit will be established to oversee maternal death prevention efforts.
Furthermore, Karnataka is set to introduce a pioneering Women's Health Policy to address evolving healthcare needs, including lifestyle and hormonal health changes. The State aims to become the first to implement such a policy, with a dedicated Deputy Director appointed to focus on women's health.
