Alarming Hypertension Detected in Karnataka Schools

Health screenings conducted for the 2025-26 academic year in Karnataka have identified a concerning prevalence of hypertension among students. Approximately 12.5% of students in government and aided schools were found to have elevated blood pressure, requiring further medical attention. These initial findings emerged from a comprehensive health check-up covering over 4.6 million students from Class I to II PUC across the state.
The Department of Health and Family Welfare's screening, which took place between April and November, identified 5,77,260 students with hypertension. While Vijayapura and Belagavi districts reported the highest sheer numbers of affected students, Davangere district registered the highest percentage, with 31.3% of screened students showing signs of hypertension. Conversely, Bengaluru South district reported the lowest figures.
