Karnataka Sees Huge Leap in Prenatal Vitamin Use
18 Jul
Summary
- Nearly 80% of pregnant women consumed IFA supplements for 100 days.
- Supplement adherence rose significantly from 44.7% in previous survey.
- Experts highlight awareness but also note adherence challenges.

Karnataka has recorded a significant improvement in prenatal nutrition practices, with the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-6 data revealing that approximately 78.9% of pregnant women consumed iron and folic acid (IFA) supplements for at least 100 days. This represents a substantial increase from the 44.7% recorded in NFHS-5, indicating enhanced adherence to recommended maternal health guidelines.
The proportion of women taking IFA supplements for 180 days or more also saw a remarkable jump, from 26.7% to 66.4%. Health professionals attribute this progress to growing awareness among expectant mothers and healthcare providers regarding the critical role of folic acid in preventing birth defects and maternal anaemia.
However, experts also emphasize that challenges remain. Factors such as ensuring continuous supply, maintaining consistent intake beyond 180 days, and encouraging postpartum consumption need further attention. Public health advocates also suggest a greater focus on dietary diversity to meet nutritional needs, rather than relying solely on supplementation.
