Karnataka has launched pioneering action plans to combat snakebite envenoming and rabies. The State Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (SAPSE) makes Karnataka the first state nationwide to release a dedicated roadmap for this issue. This plan aligns with the national goal to halve snakebite deaths and disabilities by 2030.
Concurrently, the State Action Plan for Rabies Elimination (SAPRE) was introduced, reinforcing the target of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Both plans emphasize strengthened surveillance, availability of anti-venom and vaccines, and improved healthcare access.
Free treatment for snakebite and rabies will be provided in government health facilities. Private hospitals are also directed to offer immediate life-saving care without demanding advance payment for these emergencies. Initiatives include public awareness campaigns and capacity building for healthcare personnel.
A "Rabies-Free Cities Initiative" is underway in 11 major cities, focusing on dog vaccination and population management. The success of these comprehensive plans relies on inter-departmental coordination and active community participation.
