Karnataka Health Workers Strike Over Job Security
3 Oct
Summary
- Over 5,200 health officers protest for service regularisation and salary hikes.
- Services at 6,200 primary healthcare centers are affected by the ongoing strike.
- Officials cite policy constraints for not fulfilling all demands.
In Karnataka, more than 5,200 community health officers (CHOs) have been protesting for six days, initiating their strike on September 28. Their demands include service regularisation, improved salaries, and a reconsideration of the B.Sc. nursing qualification requirement for certain posts. The strike has disrupted services at 6,200 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, formerly known as health and wellness centres, which provide essential primary healthcare at the community level.
Health department officials have assured the protesters that their jobs are secure. However, Principal Secretary Ritwik Ranjanam Pandey noted that demands for cadre creation and regularisation are complex due to National Health Mission guidelines. A written acknowledgement will be issued confirming that the B.Sc. nursing requirement will not affect current employees.
