Karnataka Govt to Aid Above Poverty Line Patients

Karnataka's Health Minister U.T. Khader announced that the state government will soon extend subsidised blood supply to patients with Above Poverty Line (APL) ration cards seeking treatment in government hospitals. This move aims to support APL cardholders from economically weaker and middle-income families who face financial difficulties during medical emergencies requiring blood transfusions.

The government is also reinforcing regulations for private hospitals, directing them to charge no more than ₹1,550 for a unit of whole blood and ₹400 over processing charges for components like plasma and platelets. The public is encouraged to report any instances of overcharging to the Health Department.

To enhance blood banking services, Karnataka plans to establish four Regional Blood Centres of Excellence in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Belagavi, and Hubballi, with an estimated cost of ₹20 crore. These centres will oversee and support blood banks in neighbouring districts, ensuring better blood availability and redistribution.

Furthermore, an intensified Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign on HIV/AIDS will commence on International Youth Day, August 12, 2026, and run for two months. This campaign focuses on prevention, testing, and awareness, building on the State's success in the 'Know Your Health Status' initiative.
