23 Sep
Summary
- New high-quality lab to ensure robust drug test reports.
- Random drug sampling from hospitals and pharmacies planned.
- Industry stakeholders seek streamlined, transparent systems.
The Karnataka government is planning to establish a high-quality laboratory dedicated to ensuring scientifically robust drug testing. Health Minister UT Khader stated on Wednesday that this move is crucial for strengthening the state's drug-testing infrastructure, particularly for generating defensible reports when challenged legally.
Until the new facility is operational, the government will identify reputed private laboratories for Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for testing. Furthermore, random sampling of medicines will be conducted from hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies to verify adherence to required standards and confirm what is supplied to patients.
The minister also indicated a push for stricter criminal provisions for serious drug-related offenses and highlighted the importance of food safety, advocating for healthy dietary practices from home. A national-level conference is planned to discuss food and drug safety systems, best practices, and potential amendments for the Centre.
Industry stakeholders, represented by the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) and the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), voiced their willingness to collaborate. They stressed the need for streamlined, transparent online systems, clear SOPs, regular workshops, and advisory board involvement for sustainable enforcement. They also suggested quarterly audits by independent inspectors.
