Birth Rate Plummets 30% in Karnataka as Deaths Surge
23 Sep
Summary
- Karnataka registered over 10.2 lakh births in 2025, crossing the 10-lakh mark.
- The state's birth rate has declined about 30% since 2000.
- Registered deaths in Karnataka have climbed 60% since 2000.
Karnataka's birth registrations reached over 10.2 lakh in 2025, marking a first in two years. Despite this numerical increase, the state's birth rate has declined by about 30% compared to its 2000 level. This demographic trend is further underscored by a 60% rise in registered deaths over the same period.
The birth rate has seen a sustained decline, falling from around 20 per 1,000 population in 2000 to 14.1 in 2025. This reduction is linked to factors such as families opting for single children and an increase in the age of marriage, according to experts.
In contrast, registered deaths have steadily increased, rising from 3.5 lakh in 2000 to 5.6 lakh in 2025. This trend has significantly narrowed the gap between births and deaths, with the ratio dropping from nearly 2.9 births per death in 2000 to approximately 1.8 in 2025.
Improvements in the civil registration system, with near 100% accuracy achieved by 2016, have contributed to the rise in registered events. This enhanced registration accuracy provides a clearer picture of the state's evolving demographic landscape.
