The Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto (SMBB) Institute of Trauma has documented over 328,000 road traffic injuries and more than 5,000 brought-dead cases within a span of ten years. This ten-year period also saw 1,448,624 patient visits to the emergency department.
Experts convened at Dow University of Health Sciences stressed that while timely medical intervention is crucial, preventing accidents is paramount. Key preventative measures include promoting road safety, obeying traffic laws, avoiding speeding, and using seat belts and helmets.
Dr. Muhammad Sabir Memon highlighted the institute's progress in emergency services, noting that effective trauma care relies on modern facilities, skilled professionals, and rapid response. The institute also reported treating 9,634 firearm injury cases over the decade.
Preventing road traffic accidents requires a collective effort involving government, healthcare institutions, traffic police, and the public. Awareness campaigns and cooperation among public-sector entities are vital for strengthening emergency systems and fostering a culture of prevention.
