Kansas School Closes Early Due to Widespread Illness

Dexter Schools USD #471 has announced an early dismissal for students and staff, moving the start of winter break up by three days due to a surge in widespread illness. The school, located southeast of Wichita, cited concerns about the high rate of sickness and the potential for it to spread to family members over the holidays.
Superintendent K.B. Criss reported that an estimated 25% to 35% of the school's 250-300 students were absent on Monday morning alone, with many families calling to report sick children. The illnesses presented a variety of symptoms, including respiratory problems, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, fevers, and severe headaches.
While the state and nation are experiencing low overall levels of respiratory illness, seasonal influenza and RSV are on the rise in various regions. Dexter Schools is offering free testing for Flu A/B, RSV, Strep A, and COVID-19. Classes are scheduled to resume on January 5th, following the extended break.
