Bangalore Hospice Trust, Karunashraya, has introduced the Kannada edition of its caregiver education series, 'Moments That Matter,' focusing on home-based palliative care. Launched on Wednesday, this 17-module animation-based series is accessible across different literacy levels, providing crucial guidance on patient care practices.
The series covers essential aspects such as managing bedsores, bladder care, and wound dressing. Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated the initiative, which is now available on YouTube. He highlighted that over 52,000 terminally ill patients in Karnataka currently benefit from home-based palliative care under the National Programme for Palliative Care.
Palliative care seeks to enhance the quality of life for individuals and their families facing serious illnesses by addressing pain and other health-related issues. The Karnataka government has established a State-level Technical Advisory Committee to oversee palliative care services, drawing inspiration from Kerala's community-based model.
Karunashraya, a collaboration between the Indian Cancer Society and Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar, has been providing free palliative care to advanced cancer patients since 1994. The organization has cared for over 31,500 patients through its home-care services and inpatient facility. The Kannada version aims to broaden access to caregiver support throughout Karnataka, addressing a noted gap in post-discharge care.
