Chirayu Hospital, in association with doctors from Fortis Bengaluru, has reached a significant milestone by completing 50 kidney transplantations. This achievement represents a crucial advancement in renal care services for the Kalaburagi region.
Nephrologist Dr. Manjunath Doshetty highlighted that kidney transplantation offers a superior long-term solution compared to lifelong dialysis, aiding patients in regaining social and financial independence. The first transplant at Chirayu occurred in 2019.
Out of the 50 successful transplants, 42 involved kidneys from relatives, while eight were from brain-dead donors. The hospital has also conducted two paediatric kidney transplants, demonstrating a broad scope of care.
The cost for the kidney transplantation procedure typically ranges between ₹7 lakh and ₹12 lakh. Recognizing the financial burden, 25 of these transplants were facilitated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring accessibility for economically weaker sections.
While dialysis sustains life, transplantation provides a renewed chance and improved quality of living. Doctors emphasized the importance of promoting organ donation, especially from brain-dead donors, to further enhance these life-saving programs.
