Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) has reported a successful multi-organ donation, a procedure that has given life to six individuals. This significant event followed the declaration of brain stem death in a 36-year-old man from Cuddalore district.
The donor, Balasubramanian, was admitted to Jipmer on August 25 following severe injuries sustained in a road accident. Despite intensive medical efforts, he was declared brain dead on August 31.
Following the crucial consent from his family, the donation process commenced. Jipmer utilized the established organ allocation system to distribute the heart, liver, and kidneys to four critically ill patients. The donor's corneas were also recovered, offering the gift of sight to two individuals.
Jipmer is now urging the public to consider and discuss organ donation. The institute emphasizes that deceased organ donation is a vital method for addressing the shortage of organs available for transplantation, thereby saving numerous lives.
