Jhansi Youth Stroke Surge: Lifestyle Blamed
29 Oct
Summary
- Stroke cases among young adults aged 20-40 are rising.
- Changing lifestyles are major risk factors for youth strokes.
- Early medical intervention can significantly reduce stroke disability.
A public awareness program was jointly organized by the Department of Neurology at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College and the Bundelkhand Neurology Foundation on World Stroke Day. The initiative highlighted the increasing incidence of stroke among young people in the Bundelkhand region.
Neurology department head Dr. Arvind Kanakne stated that stroke cases in individuals aged 20-40 years have been frequently reported. He identified changing lifestyles, lack of physical activity, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and excessive consumption of unhealthy fats as significant risk factors.
Dr. Kanakne explained that stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is interrupted or a blood vessel ruptures, leading to brain cell damage. Ischaemic stroke (blockage) and haemorrhagic stroke (bleeding) are the two main types. Warning signs include sudden weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, blurred vision, and severe headache.
Timely treatment, including clot-dissolving medication or clot removal procedures, can significantly reduce the risk of permanent disability. The neurology department offers free stroke treatment services funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
