Jersey Hospital AC Failure: Heatwave Disrupts Surgery
28 May
Summary
- Record heat caused mechanical failures in three of Jersey Hospital's seven operating theatres.
- Emergency, urgent, and maternity care will continue despite postponed planned operations.
- Repairs to the air conditioning systems are expected to take at least two weeks.

Jersey Hospital is experiencing significant operational challenges due to a severe heatwave, which has caused critical failures in the air conditioning systems of three of its seven operating theatres.
Medical director Simon West stated that the heatwave led to the failure of air-handling units, necessitating temporary closures for repairs. Despite these disruptions, the hospital has assured patients that emergency, urgent, and maternity care services will continue as normal.
A contingency plan has been implemented, utilizing the remaining operating theatres to maintain essential services. However, West warned that approximately 20 planned operations and procedures per day will be postponed and rescheduled.
The hospital facilities, described as aging, are struggling to cope with the extreme temperatures. This has led to limitations on electrical equipment usage in some areas to prevent fire or overload risks. Repairs are estimated to take a minimum of two weeks, with a focus on prioritizing urgent care, obstetrics, and cancer surgeries.
