AI Guides Pregnant Teen to Lifesaving Concealed Birth
17 May
Summary
- A pregnant minor used AI to find a confidential birth option.
- Jikei Hospital accepted the teen, citing risks to her and baby.
- Around 70 children born via confidential births since December 2019.

A teenage girl, identified as Haruka, sought help via a confidential birth system after discovering her pregnancy. Fearing abuse from her parents and with no other support, an AI tool directed her to Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto, Japan.
Despite initial reservations about accepting a minor, hospital director Takeshi Hasuda agreed, noting the severe risks to both Haruka and her unborn child if she were to give birth alone or if her parents were contacted. The delivery was complicated, requiring a vacuum extraction due to the baby's dropped heart rate.
After the birth, Haruka, lacking financial resources and family support, opted for special adoption, entrusting her child to others. She expressed profound gratitude for the confidential birth system and the hospital staff who "saved" her.
Since its inception in December 2019, Jikei Hospital's confidential birth initiative has facilitated approximately 70 births. However, the underdeveloped legal framework for such services highlights a need for increased support for healthcare professionals on the front lines.
