Japan Supplements: 20% Overdose Daily Limits
8 Apr
Summary
- Nearly one-fifth of Japanese supplement users exceed recommended daily intake.
- Over 60% of excessive consumers ingest nutrients above safe upper limits.
- Magnesium, niacin, and vitamin A are common nutrients taken in excess.

A study conducted in Japan found that about 20% of individuals using dietary supplements consume them in amounts surpassing recommended daily levels. The research, which surveyed 2,002 Japanese adults in late 2024, indicated that many users are unaware of safe intake limits. Further analysis revealed that among those exceeding recommended doses, a significant majority—around 60%—ingested nutrients beyond the tolerable upper intake level, considered the maximum safe amount. Specific nutrients like magnesium, niacin, and vitamin A were frequently consumed at excessive levels. The study, published on March 19 in the Interactive Journal of Medical Research, also pinpointed demographic and behavioral factors linked to this overconsumption. These include age between 50 and 64, employment status, use of tablet supplements, and prolonged usage. Researchers emphasized the critical need for improved consumer education regarding correct dosage and responsible supplement selection to mitigate potential health hazards associated with excessive intake.
