Doctors Quit Jamshedpur Hospital Amidst Strict Duty Code
3 Feb
Summary
- 26 out of 65 junior doctors resigned from MGMMCH in two months.
- A new, stricter duty code allegedly prompted the mass resignations.
- Hospital superintendent cites annual exam preparation as primary reason.

A wave of resignations has significantly reduced the junior doctor staff at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur. Over the last two months, 26 out of 65 junior doctors have left their positions. This departure has left the hospital with only 39 junior doctors.
The primary catalyst for these resignations appears to be a recently enforced stricter duty code. This new policy involves continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of doctors' attendance, ward presence, and punctuality. Consequently, some doctors faced show-cause notices and disciplinary actions for absences during surprise inspections.
However, the MGMMCH superintendent, Dr. Balram Jha, stated that such resignations are a normal annual occurrence. He explained that junior doctors frequently resign to focus on preparing for competitive postgraduate and super-specialization entrance examinations. While acknowledging the strict duty code might play a role, Dr. Jha emphasized that the pursuit of higher studies is the main driver for these departures.
