Burn specialists convened in Jaipur for a national workshop, emphasizing the urgent need for standardized protocols and enhanced preparedness to manage mass burn casualty incidents effectively. The two-day event at SMS Medical College gathered approximately 200 medical professionals from Rajasthan and other states, discussing critical aspects of burn care.
Discussions covered advances in chemical and mass-casualty burn management, including emergency response, surgical techniques, pediatric burns, and critical care. Experts also addressed electrical burns, dermal matrices, and complex reconstructions. Dr. RK Jain, organizing chairman, highlighted SMS Hospital's role as the state's apex burn referral center and advocated for a dedicated Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
This proposed institute would consolidate acute care, reconstruction, rehabilitation, skin banking, training, and research. The workshop also stressed the importance of skin banking, infection control, physiotherapy, and psychological support for burn survivors. The state government's budget announcement for seven regional burn care centers was welcomed, with SMS Hospital positioned to support these facilities.
