IVF Mix-Up: DNA Test Reveals Wrong Mother
17 Mar
Summary
- Sisters discovered an IVF embryo mix-up through a DNA test.
- They were implanted in the wrong mother at Royal North Shore Hospital.
- The mix-up occurred about 30 years ago during IVF treatments.

An IVF embryo mix-up from approximately 30 years ago has been uncovered by two sisters, Sasha and her twin, who used a DNA test to explore their heritage. The sisters learned through Ancestry.com that a stranger was their maternal aunt. Further investigation revealed that this woman was their biological mother, and their parents had unknowingly carried and raised them after an implantation error at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital.
Their parents, Penny Szafranski and her husband, underwent IVF treatments in the late 1990s. The hospital is believed to have mistakenly implanted embryos belonging to another couple into Penny. The biological parents of the twins, and the parents they were raised by, were all patients at the same hospital. Both families are pursuing legal action and seeking information from the hospital regarding the incident.
