- The provision of free products aims to prevent missed school, work, and activities.
Essential period products, including sanitary towels and tampons, are now legally recognized as basic health and hygiene items on the Isle of Man. The Public Health Director, Matt Tyrer, highlighted their non-optional nature, spearheading a new scheme for free provision. This initiative stems from the Period Products (free provision) Act, a private members' bill introduced in 2024 by MHK Joney Faragher, which has now received Royal Assent.
The new law, set to be fully implemented by October 2027, aims to ensure individuals who menstruate do not have to miss school, work, or daily activities. The scheme is designed to assist households with low incomes, guaranteeing access to these vital products. This follows successful programs established in Scotland and Northern Ireland, reflecting a growing recognition of period poverty as a significant issue.
Advocates from the Manx Menstrual Movement, Rhian Evans and Nicki Gaskell, celebrated the bill's passage, noting it was 'a long time coming.' They have been actively addressing period poverty through donation and 'pick and mix' stations since 2023. Public health officials are now engaging with the community to determine the most sustainable and accessible product options and distribution points, which may include local authorities, schools, and libraries.
