Summary
- An old pub is being transformed into a modern healthcare facility.
- The development aims to improve patient waiting times.
- This project repurposes an existing building, proving more economical.

Construction has commenced to convert the former Inkerman Pub on Norwich Road, Ipswich, into an expanded healthcare facility. The project, which began on Tuesday, will see the pub site extended and connected to the existing Cardinal Medical Practice. This nine-month development aims to increase the number of clinical rooms, group spaces, and waiting areas.
The initiative, led by Cardinal Medical Practice with support from the NHS Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board (ICB), is anticipated to reduce patient waiting times. Officials highlighted the project's role in revitalizing a historic site while enhancing local healthcare services and staff working conditions. The strategy of renovating and repurposing existing buildings is noted as a more economical alternative to new construction.
The expanded practice will benefit from an additional 327 sq m of floor space, bringing its total clinical capacity up. It will also gain 12 new parking spaces to serve its current patient list of 27,307. This transformation follows the earlier cancellation of plans for a large-scale 'super surgery'.
