Summary

- Complaints involved treatment of two patients with liver disease.
- Board found standard of care failures but no license suspension.

The Iowa Board of Medicine has issued a $5,000 fine to Des Moines surgeon Dr. Qasim L. Chaudhry. This action follows a review of complaints regarding his treatment of two patients with liver disease, identified as R.B. and R.C. Early in the process, the board had alleged Chaudhry posed an immediate danger and sought to suspend his license.
However, subsequent proceedings revealed procedural issues, leading to a rescheduled hearing and the lifting of an emergency suspension. The board ultimately concluded that while Chaudhry failed to meet the standard of care in certain aspects of his treatment of R.B., these failures did not negatively impact his prognosis. Regarding R.C., the board found the state failed to prove regulatory violations.
Despite these conclusions, the board imposed the civil penalty. Chaudhry, a physician licensed in Iowa since 2010, was formerly associated with the Iowa Methodist Transplant Center. He has previously been named in dismissed medical malpractice lawsuits.
