An 8-month-old infant weighing 5.5 kg, with a known case of Chronic Liver Disease (CLD) and Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia (EHBA), has successfully undergone a complex liver transplant. The child was in critical condition due to severe liver complications. A multivisceral transplant team at MGM Healthcare Malar, Adyar, performed the surgery, with the child's father acting as the living liver donor.
Dr. Anil Vaidya, MD, Chair and Director of the Institute of Multi-Visceral and Abdominal Organ Transplant, highlighted the challenging nature of performing a transplant on such a young and underweight patient. He emphasized that immediate action was necessary given the severity of the child's condition, and praised the multidisciplinary team's coordination for the successful surgery. The infant is currently recovering well.
The transplant procedure involved a collaboration of specialists from Multi-Visceral and Abdominal Organ Transplant, Paediatrics & Neonatology, Medical, and Interventional Gastroenterology departments. Post-operative care was managed by intensive care unit teams. This rare and complex milestone was achieved by MGM Healthcare Malar, Adyar, demonstrating their commitment to advanced pediatric liver transplant care.
