26 May
Summary
- Young Indigenous woman died after severe pregnancy complication.
- Family alleges systemic barriers and calls for investigation.
- Baby survived, but family seeks accountability from healthcare.
Family and friends of Jaali Sutherland-Weenie, a young Indigenous woman, are seeking accountability from the healthcare system following her death due to a severe pregnancy complication. Sutherland-Weenie, 24, was 36 weeks pregnant when she began experiencing severe pain and vomiting on April 25.
She was initially taken to Rosthern hospital before being transferred to Saskatoon and admitted to Jim Pattison Children's Hospital. Her family reports she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a serious blood pressure condition. After approximately 14 hours in an observation room, she was moved to a labour and delivery room on April 26, where she passed away less than two hours later. Her infant daughter survived and is healthy.
The family has not received autopsy results but attributes her death to failures within the healthcare system. They are advocating for a comprehensive, independent investigation and suggest she may have faced different treatment had she not been Indigenous. The Saskatchewan Health Authority confirmed that all maternal deaths during labor or delivery are immediately investigated as critical incidents and that this process is underway.
