Ensuring Safe Digital Mental Health Support for India
18 Apr
Summary
- A repository of mental health apps is proposed for Indian users.
- Concerns include safety vulnerabilities and lack of evidence in apps.
- A pilot repository of 350 apps is already available online.

Stakeholders are advocating for a centralized repository of mental health applications to guide Indian users through the fragmented digital landscape. Many existing apps suffer from safety issues and lack empirical evidence, with only about 5%-11% demonstrating clear backing for their programs. This initiative aims to provide accessible, simple summaries to facilitate informed choices.
A pilot repository, developed through a systematic review of publicly available apps, already lists around 350 applications. This resource, accessible online, allows users to filter apps by platform, concern, and cost. The ICMR-Nimhans Centre for Advanced Research (CAR) has also recommended forming a high-powered committee to establish a national governance framework for mental health apps.
Further recommendations include creating a national directory for apps meeting minimum standards and developing digital mental health literacy courses for service providers. These efforts are crucial to address the 'dead-end funnel' issue where users receive disclaimers instead of actionable guidance and to ensure better collaboration between tech and mental health experts.
