5 Mar
Summary
- 81% of people living with HIV know their status.
- Vertical HIV transmission reduced from 25% to 11.75%.
- Key populations face disproportionately higher HIV rates.

Experts convened virtually to discuss India's HIV response, noting commendable progress but emphasizing the urgent need to intensify last-mile efforts to eradicate AIDS. Current data indicates that 81% of the 25.44 lakh individuals living with HIV are aware of their status. Of these, 88% are receiving antiretroviral therapy, with 97% achieving viral suppression.
Significant strides have been made in reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission, with rates dropping from 25% in 2020 to 11.75% in 2023. Despite these advancements, key populations such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, and sex workers still face disproportionately higher HIV rates compared to the general population. Experts will further deliberate on intensified strategies at the upcoming ASICON 2026 conference in Mumbai.
