India's healthcare landscape has undergone a significant transformation by 2025, marked by enhanced access and reduced patient costs. The National Statistical Office's 80th Round Survey reveals a notable increase in the utilization of public healthcare facilities. This surge in usage suggests growing public trust in government-run services.
Key findings from the survey, released on April 29, 2026, highlight a substantial drop in median out-of-pocket hospitalisation costs within public facilities, falling to Rs 1,100. For outpatient care in these facilities, the median cost is reported as zero, underscoring improved affordability. Government-backed insurance coverage has seen a dramatic increase, more than tripling to 45.5% in rural and 31.8% in urban areas.
Health-seeking behavior has also improved, with a near doubling of the proportion of the population reporting ailments between 2017-18 and 2025. Maternal healthcare has shown strong gains, with institutional deliveries now at 95.6% in rural and 97.8% in urban areas. The survey also notes an epidemiological shift, with a decline in infectious diseases and a rise in non-communicable diseases, necessitating a focus on preventive care and long-term management.
