India's Kids: Screen Time Overload Revealed
13 Mar
Summary
- Many Indian children exceed recommended screen time limits.
- Screen addiction affects 22.2% of children in the study.
- Excessive screen use harms physical and cognitive development.

Recent findings indicate that children in India are spending excessive amounts of time on screens, surpassing global health guidelines. A study involving children and adolescents with mental disorders found that their average daily screen time was 3.1 hours. Alarmingly, two-thirds of the participants, averaging 13 years of age, exceeded recommended limits set by health organizations. Television and mobile phones were the most common devices used, with 22.2% meeting the criteria for screen media addiction. This pervasive issue contributes to physical health problems like obesity and sedentary behavior, alongside cognitive impairments such as delayed language development and reduced executive functioning. Furthermore, excessive screen exposure has been linked to structural changes in young children's brains, impacting learning and communication networks. Psychosocially, addiction leads to deception, withdrawal, and family conflicts, while increasing risks of cyberbullying and exposure to unsafe online content. The research stresses the critical need for parental intervention and consistent regulation, particularly as children with neurodevelopmental disorders are often given extra screen time as a coping mechanism, exacerbating existing problems. Routine evaluations of screen habits and adherence to guidelines are essential for protecting children's well-being.
