India Develops Affordable Disease Treatment
21 Nov
Summary
- India demonstrates capacity for low-cost, groundbreaking medical treatments.
- New discovery offers significant benefits for tribal populations.
- Clinical trials set to begin next year with IGIB and Serum Institute.

A significant advancement in medical treatment has emerged from India, showcasing the nation's ability to produce innovative therapies at a fraction of international costs. This breakthrough is poised to have a profound impact on public health across the country, with a special focus on tribal populations in central and eastern India, regions that experience a higher burden of disease.
The next phase of development involves clinical trials, a collaborative effort between the Serum Institute and the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB). The first stage of these trials is anticipated to begin in the upcoming year, with AIIMS, New Delhi, also participating.
IGIB has already identified a cohort of approximately 150 potential participants. These individuals are primarily from tribal communities located in the central and eastern parts of India, specifically within the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, ensuring the trials reach the communities most in need.
