30 Jul
Summary

- The state will pay a reduced monthly cost thanks to federal and manufacturer contributions.
- Expanded access aims to improve health and workforce participation.

Indiana is set to expand access to GLP-1 medications for obesity treatment for eligible Hoosiers covered by Medicaid. Governor Mike Braun has directed the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration to participate in a federal initiative aimed at making these treatments more accessible and affordable.
This participation in the BALANCE model allows Indiana Medicaid to access GLP-1 medications at a lower cost. The state will contribute $85.16 of the monthly $245 cost per person, with discounts from manufacturers and federal contributions helping to cover the remainder. Manufacturers will also provide complementary lifestyle support programs.
While specific eligibility criteria and the exact timeline for implementation are still being finalized, the initiative is projected to yield significant benefits. These include improved health outcomes for residents, increased workforce participation, and a potential reduction in the state's reliance on public assistance programs.
