Village Bans Booze for Unmarried Youth

A fishing village in Nagapattinam district has enacted a significant ban on alcohol consumption for unmarried youth, aiming to improve community peace and public health. The resolution, passed by the panchayat in Vizhunthamavadi, prohibits unmarried young men from drinking within the village limits starting from August 2nd. Violators face a Rs 5,000 fine, with evidence required for proof of guilt. Married men will incur the same penalty if they cause disturbances at home or in public while intoxicated.

The initiative is seen as a collective effort by village leaders to curb alcohol-related problems and cultivate a healthier environment for the next generation. This move has reportedly brought considerable relief to fisherfolk families, especially women and children who often bear the brunt of alcohol-related issues. Vizhunthamavadi is a predominantly fishing village with a population of around 7,000, supporting approximately 5,000 voters and around 300 fishing boats.
