Professor Vishali Gupta of PGIMER Chandigarh has achieved a landmark recognition, becoming the first India-trained and India-based clinician to be awarded the International Uveitis Study Group's Gold Medal. This esteemed honor, presented every four years, acknowledges her pioneering work in ocular inflammation and will be bestowed upon her in Tübingen, Germany, in July 2026.
Gupta's research has profoundly impacted global health, particularly her work on ocular tuberculosis. She identified that many cases previously treated as autoimmune diseases responded significantly to anti-TB medication, leading to the international recognition of TB serpiginous-like choroiditis. Her efforts also include establishing a global network to gather evidence on TB's impact on the eye.
Beyond her specific research, Gupta championed the rational use of medical imaging in uveitis, co-authoring guidelines to reduce patient burden and cost. She encourages young researchers to pursue original ideas, emphasizing that impactful work can be achieved without extensive external funding, fueled by dedication to patients and scientific inquiry.
