Indian Breast Cancer: Genetic Secrets Unlocked
2 Mar
Summary
- One in four Indian breast cancer patients has a genetic variant.
- Most variants found are outside known BRCA1/BRCA2 genes.
- Study involved IIT-Madras, Karkinos Healthcare, and hospitals.

A recent study has uncovered a significant genetic link in Indian breast cancer cases, finding that one in four patients possesses an inherited genetic variant associated with cancer risk. This discovery is particularly notable as the majority of these identified genetic variants were found outside the commonly known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
The comprehensive research was a collaborative effort involving the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) and Karkinos Healthcare, with additional support from Kumaran Hospital and the Chennai Breast Centre. These findings were formally published in the journal BMC Cancer, contributing valuable insights into the genetic underpinnings of breast cancer specific to the Indian population.
