India Launches Valve Registry for Heart Health

On September 4, 2026, Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan inaugurated the "India Valve Registry" during the "India Valves 2026" conference. This clinician-led, multicentre platform is designed to meticulously track patient-level data on valve diseases and interventions. The registry's creation underscores the necessity of generating India-specific clinical evidence, complementing global research.
Tamil Nadu is actively participating as a stakeholder, with Health Minister K.G. Arunraj highlighting advancements. The state's Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) is set to increase its annual cover five-fold to ₹25 lakh per family. This move ensures that even complex cardiac treatments become affordable for all citizens.
The minister also detailed the success of the Tamil Nadu STEMI program, a hub-and-spoke model for heart attack care that has been internationally recognized. Data from CMCHIS reveals that 2,590 heart valve replacement surgeries were performed in the past 20 months, with approximately four procedures happening daily. Notably, 53% of recipients were women, and nearly four out of every five bioprosthetic valves implanted were domestically manufactured.
