India has announced a significant contribution of USD 10 million towards bolstering preparedness, response, and recovery efforts for the ongoing Ebola outbreak. This pledge was made at a virtual summit convened by the African Union, chaired by its Chairperson and President of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye.
The Union Health Minister, JP Nadda, stated that India is committed to supporting Africa's initiatives to combat the epidemic. This support includes the 45 tonnes of medical supplies already dispatched and a commitment to provide further essential medicines, nutritional support, and laboratory materials.
Furthermore, India plans to engage in technical collaboration and capacity-building programs for African health institutions. This partnership aims to strengthen Africa's overall health security and resilience against infectious diseases like Ebola.
The announcement comes as G7 leaders and other partner countries, including India, emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated international response to the re-emerging Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, recognizing it as a significant global health security risk.
