- Essential medical devices across 24 categories could see price caps.
Karnataka's Food Safety and Drugs Administration has formally requested the central government to establish price regulations for essential medical devices. This initiative, proposed by FDA commissioner Srinivas K in letters dated September 18, 2026, aims to alleviate the financial strain on patients by capping prices. The proposal suggests creating a National List of Essential Medical Devices (NLEMD), mirroring the existing framework for essential medicines.
The suggested NLEMD would encompass devices vital for 24 distinct medical categories. These include equipment crucial for cardiovascular and respiratory care, neurology, obstetrics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, oncology, radiotherapy, and kidney treatments. The move follows concerns raised by state FDA departments about substantial markups on medical consumables.
