India has rapidly become a global powerhouse in liver transplantation, with experts highlighting world-class infrastructure and unique surgical expertise as key drivers. In 2024 alone, approximately 5,000 liver transplants were performed across more than 200 active centers nationwide. The country distinguishes itself by performing the highest number of living donor liver transplants (LDLT) globally.
This achievement is underpinned by rigorous protocols, a transparent donor evaluation system, and multidisciplinary teams committed to patient care. Every LDLT procedure in India adheres to a strict, legally monitored process, ensuring the safety of both donors and recipients. This meticulous approach, governed by state and national regulatory bodies, has resulted in one of the highest success rates worldwide.
Experts at the Annual Conference of The Liver Transplantation Society of India (LTSICON 2025) emphasized that India's model of living donor liver transplantation is becoming a gold standard. The conference, which convened over a thousand specialists from more than 20 countries, served as a platform for sharing innovations and fostering global collaboration to make liver transplantation more accessible and safer for everyone.
